Brightly colored Adirondack chairs on the beach await in this peaceful corner of British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley: a family-friendly lakefront resort which offers a warm welcome and plenty of distractions for children big and small.
The resort is located around 10 minutes’ drive from the main drag of downtown Kelowna, and five minutes from the independent stores of Pandosy Village. It is next to a marina and boasts its own small private beachfront. The entrance to the Mission Creek Greenway which connects to 12 miles (20km) of trails is a few minute’s walks away. Kelowna boasts dozens of excellent wineries, with five different wine trails to explore.
Manteo isn’t the most modern of hotels: perhaps it’s the terracotta-painted exterior, or maybe the self-playing baby grand piano in the lobby? But for a boutique-style resort, Manteo still manages to pack in plenty of activities and facilities, as well as offering excellent value for money and genuinely warm service along the way.
Many of the staff have been here for over a decade and their above-and-beyond friendly welcome makes Manteo a popular choice for returning guests. The resort has a watersports and bike rental shop where you can hire kayaks and paddleboards to enjoy the lake. There is nine-hole golf, a tennis/pickleball court, indoor and outdoor swimming pools (with an adults-only option), a whirlpool bath, and a small gym which covers all basics.
A movie theatre is available on a first-come, first served basis and the hotel has a DVD library. During summer, parents can enjoy local craft beers and wine on the sunset deck while children enjoy pizza and movie night. There are also nightly entertainments on the lake with live music and jet pack shows on the water. The games room has table tennis, air hockey, and fußball, and there’s plenty of space for rainy day indoor fun. Inside the hotel, there are microwaves and coin-laundry facilities available on each floor.
The resort is split between 78 guest rooms and 24 self-catering villas – all generously sized and spotlessly clean – the rooms come complete with Keurig coffee machines and balconies overlooking the lake (definitely the best views) or the distant mountains.
The décor veers towards neutral beiges and natural wood with pops of royal blue and terracotta. Suites come with full kitchens and lounge areas, and the villas offer up a multi-level space complete with BBQ and lake view patio, washer-dryers and all mod-cons.
The Smack Dab restaurant is open from breakfast till dinner boasting Kelowna’s largest patio overlooking the lake. The breakfast buffet is a bargain at $12.99 Canadian dollars (£8), offering up fun breakfast pizzas topped with crispy bacon and scrambled eggs, along with the usual fruits, yogurts and baked goods.
Lunch and dinner keep things casual with the roaring pizza oven in full service along with well-priced and piled-high tasty burgers from 18.50 Canadian dollars (£11) sandwiches, salads, and pasta from 20 Canadian dollars (£12). The bar menu has an excellent selection of Pacific Northwest-focused craft beers and plenty of wines from the local wineries.
